The Home Office has unveiled video footage of the initial mass removal of migrants arriving by small boats through an agreement with France. In the past week, two group flights repatriated 19 individuals to France, with the second flight landing in France today before proceeding to Eastern Europe.
The video from the first group flight captures people boarding the plane, their identities concealed. This development follows the removal of seven individuals from the UK last month under a pact brokered with French President Emmanuel Macron earlier in the year.
Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood cautioned potential small boat migrants about attempting to reach Britain, emphasizing the stark difference from the previous government’s unsuccessful Rwanda initiative, which cost £700 million and led only four individuals to voluntarily leave the UK. The current administration faces mounting pressure to address the small boats crisis as Nigel Farage’s Reform party gains traction in opinion polls.
Mahmood emphasized the need to halt these perilous crossings, highlighting the swift success of the recent repatriations facilitated by the agreement with France. She issued a stern warning, indicating that individuals arriving illegally risk detention and removal, urging them to reconsider embarking on such journeys.
Under the UK-France arrangement, asylum seekers undertaking the hazardous Channel crossing will be sent back to France, while an equivalent number of individuals with legitimate asylum claims will be permitted entry into the UK. Additional flights to France under this trial program are slated for the near future.
This week, nine people arrived in the UK from France via the newly established legal channel after undergoing security screenings. Overall, Home Office data shows that 18 individuals have entered the UK while 26 have been repatriated.
