The price of the standard TV Licence increased to £174.50 in April, impacting many consumers. This annual fee is mandatory for households or businesses that watch live television or use BBC iPlayer.
Surprisingly, some individuals may qualify for a free or discounted licence under certain circumstances. This includes those with black-and-white TV sets, usually costing £58.50 per year.
Government guidance indicates that individuals over 75 years old receiving Pension Credit may be eligible for a free TV Licence. The same applies if they live with a partner who receives Pension Credit, as the licence covers everyone at that address.
It’s essential to distinguish Pension Credit from the State Pension. Pension Credit is a means-tested benefit for individuals over State Pension age with low incomes, boosting weekly earnings to £227.10 for singles or £346.60 for partners.
Those eligible for Pension Credit can apply for a free TV Licence at age 74, but must pay until the month before turning 75. After that, they qualify for the free licence.
Moreover, individuals who are blind or in residential care can apply for a discounted TV Licence. To qualify for the residential care discount, one must be retired and over 60 or disabled.
For eligible individuals, the TV Licence cost can drop to just £7.50. Managers at residential care homes can also submit applications on behalf of residents.
Additionally, individuals who are registered blind or live with a registered blind person can receive a 50% reduction on their TV Licence, lowering the cost of a color licence to £87.25.
To apply for a free TV Licence, individuals over 75 receiving Pension Credit can do so online or via phone. Those who are registered blind can apply for a licence on the TV Licensing website.

Last year, the Secretary of State announced a 2.9% price increase effective from April 1, 2025, aligning with annual CPI inflation.
This increase translates to just over a penny daily and marks only the second licence fee hike since April 1, 2021. Consequently, the annual color licence fee is now £174.50, while the black and white licence fee stands at £58.50 per year.
Future licence fee adjustments will be linked to CPI inflation until 2027.
