Trump Threatens “Most Crushing Economic Operation” Against Countries Backing Iran

Date:

U.S. President Donald Trump declared on social media Wednesday his intention to implement what he described as “the MOST CRUSHING ECONOMIC OPERATION EVER TAKEN AGAINST ANY COUNTRY!” Trump emphasized that this would involve Economic Warfare and Isolation on an unprecedented scale, although he provided minimal specifics.

In his post on Truth Social, Trump also cautioned about economic repercussions for any nation that backed Tehran or offered any form of support to Iran. He stated that any country permitting its financial institutions, businesses, airports, or government entities to aid Iran would face significant economic consequences.

Without pinpointing the exact measures Washington would employ against such countries, Trump demanded an immediate halt to activities like oil smuggling, swap lines, cash transfers, exchange houses, ship registries, and front companies. He issued a stern warning, stating, “You know who you are.”

Amid a six-month-old conflict that involved countries across the Gulf and Iran’s demonstrated control over shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, the global markets were rattled. Approximately one-fifth of the world’s traded oil passed through this crucial waterway before February.

Despite two failed ceasefire agreements between the U.S. and Iran in April and June, aimed at restoring shipping flow through the Strait of Hormuz, the conflict persists. Trump’s social media proclamations are not consistently followed through.

The United Arab Emirates recently suspended all trade activities, commercial exchanges, and financial transactions with Iran following reports of missiles allegedly launched from Iran. China, a significant purchaser of Iran’s oil, could face economic consequences if the U.S. escalates economic measures against it.

Iran’s supreme leader’s adviser, Mohammad Mokhber, reiterated Iran’s willingness to engage in dialogue with the U.S. but emphasized that negotiations should not be mistaken for surrender. Mokhber highlighted that military pressure and sanctions would not weaken Iran’s determination.

While Trump denied ongoing talks with Iran, his son-in-law and special envoy, Jared Kushner, indicated that discussions with Iran were still underway and potentially more robust than ever.
