“Family Memoir Reveals Unseen Wounds & Enduring Bonds”

Date:

Donna Morrissey and her four siblings were reminiscing over drinks one evening when she had an epiphany. Growing up in Newfoundland, Morrissey and her sisters predominantly spent time indoors with their mother, while her brothers engaged in outdoor activities with their father. This pattern persisted into adulthood, keeping Morrissey unaware of certain aspects of her father’s character until that revelatory night.

From this reflective gathering emerged Morrissey’s latest book, “Tell It to the Water: Five Siblings Tell of Their Father’s Grief and His Struggle Back to Hope.” While the narrative focuses on Morrissey’s father coping with the loss of his wife to cancer, it also delves into other tragic events, notably the untimely death of Morrissey’s brother, Ford, in a workplace accident four decades ago.

Reflecting on the experience, Morrissey, who splits her time between Halifax and her home province, expressed how hearing her siblings recount their stories, including their unseen wounds, was a poignant revelation for her.

Despite being an author of numerous fictional works, delving into this memoir left Morrissey emotionally exposed. She confessed that parts of the process moved her to tears, highlighting the rawness of the familial narrative.

The book’s chapters are narrated from the perspectives of Morrissey and her siblings, with each segment attributing the viewpoint. Crafting these stories for publication involved extensive dialogues among the siblings, challenging discussions clarifying intentions behind certain passages and emotions experienced during pivotal moments.

While tensions briefly surfaced among the siblings, who are known to bicker but swiftly reconcile, Morrissey emphasized that the book ultimately strengthened the bond between them, fostering a deeper connection.

Addressing the psychology of grief, Dr. Simon Sherry, a psychologist at Crux Psychology in Halifax, shared insights on the enduring nature of relationships with deceased loved ones. He explained that despite physical separation, emotional connections persist, offering a form of solace to those grieving.

Morrissey aims for her book to inspire readers to reflect on their own family dynamics and provide a template for individuals contemplating documenting their family history. She noted that the process of chronicling their tragedies has brought her closer to her siblings, heightening their appreciation for each other as they navigate the ongoing impact of their shared experiences.

Ultimately, the memoir serves as a testament to the enduring bonds of family and the resilience that emerges from shared hardships.
