A charming Georgian hotel located in the heart of a bustling Welsh market town caught my attention during a recent stay. Situated in Llandeilo, this landmark property stands out amidst the town’s vibrant scenery of pastel-hued facades, creating a picturesque setting in one of the UK’s most lively and community-oriented towns.
Llandeilo, surrounded by the picturesque Carmarthenshire countryside, boasts a plethora of 18th and 19th-century structures, housing a variety of independent boutique shops, cozy cafes, and traditional pubs. Despite not receiving as much attention as popular Welsh destinations like Tenby or Narberth, Llandeilo exudes its own unique charm and offers a delightful experience well worth exploring.
Perched above the Towy valley, Llandeilo features a historic stone bridge spanning the meandering river, serving as a gateway to the town. A medieval castle in ruins overlooks the valley from the town’s outskirts, adding a touch of medieval allure to the surroundings.
The standout Cawdor hotel, with its striking cherry-red exterior, stands in stark contrast to the colorful array of buildings in the town. Recognized as one of the top 100 hotels in the UK by The Sunday Times Travel, this four-star establishment exudes Georgian elegance and charm from the moment you step inside.
Boasting a rich history dating back to the Georgian era and proudly listed as Grade II, The Cawdor offers 24 beautifully furnished bedrooms and two luxurious penthouse apartments, each showcasing its unique style and character. Guests are treated to a comfortable and elegant stay with amenities like premium bedding, plush pillows, and spacious Hypnos beds for a rejuvenating sleep.
The hotel’s bathrooms are adorned with exquisite Melin Tregwynt accessories, adding a touch of local flair, while complimentary Wi-Fi and luxurious Myddfai toiletries further enhance the guest experience. Upon entering our spacious attic room, we were greeted by a blend of wooden floors, exposed beams, and a cozy color palette, creating a welcoming ambiance reminiscent of a blend between sophistication and countryside charm.
The hotel’s dining room, though exuding Georgian authenticity, could benefit from a splash of color to enliven the decor. However, the friendly and attentive staff more than compensated for the lackluster ambiance, providing excellent recommendations on dishes and wine pairings that elevated the dining experience.
Delighting our taste buds, the kitchen’s focus on fresh, locally sourced ingredients shone through in the succulent Welsh steak and perfectly battered fish of the day served to us. Accompanied by flavorful sauces and paired with quality wine, the dining experience at The Cawdor exceeded our expectations.
After a satisfying meal, we retired to our cozy attic room for a restful night’s sleep, waking up refreshed and ready to explore the charming town of Llandeilo the next day. Following a leisurely breakfast in the dining room, offering a variety of Welsh specialties, we concluded that The Cawdor seamlessly blends historical charm with modern comfort, ensuring a memorable stay for guests seeking a relaxing getaway.
Llandeilo’s surrounding attractions, including ancient castles like Dinefwr Castle and Carreg Cennen, as well as picturesque gardens and parklands, offer ample opportunities for exploration and discovery. With its rich history, scenic landscapes, and warm hospitality, The Cawdor and its idyllic setting in Llandeilo promise a delightful retreat for travelers seeking a blend of comfort and heritage.
