One out of every five parents believes that their child has been excluded from a party because of their food allergies, according to a recent survey conducted among 500 parents of children with food intolerances. The survey also found that 40 percent of parents think that others are hesitant to buy the right food items for such occasions.
Almost two-thirds of these parents have heard discussions about parties to which their child was not invited, with a significant majority (84 percent) attributing this exclusion to their child’s dietary restrictions. However, more than half of them express concerns about their child missing out on enjoyable moments and the chance to build friendships.
The research was initiated by NOMO, a plant-based chocolate brand, which has introduced an allergy-friendly birthday cake bar. Tara Stevens, representing the free-from confectionary brand, emphasized the importance of inclusive and safe food options for all children, especially those with allergies.
On average, parents estimate that their children have missed four parties due to their allergies, and 34 percent report instances of their child being teased because of their allergy. To address their worries about food safety at parties, 67 percent of parents frequently pack snacks and treats for their children as a precaution.
Fruits (60 percent), vegetables (59 percent), and rice cakes (42 percent) are viewed as the safest food choices by the participants. Additionally, 72 percent of parents bring allergy-free products to birthday parties as a sweet treat alternative.
To prevent their children from feeling excluded, 38 percent of parents recommend always inquiring about dietary needs in advance, 34 percent advise avoiding common allergens like nuts, and 25 percent wish for celebrations to offer food options that everyone can enjoy.
Tara Stevens from NOMO, who has also introduced a range of chocolate lollies, stresses the importance of inclusivity and mindfulness in accommodating children with allergies. She highlights the assurance that all NOMO products are free from the top 14 allergens, aiming to make every child feel welcome, safe, and part of the fun.
