“Former World No.78 Tennis Player Nicolas Kicker Withdraws Mid-Match in ATP Challenger Tour Event”

Date:

Nicolas Kicker pulled out of his quarter-final match against Gustavo Heide during an ATP Challenger Tour event in Florianopolis, Brazil, while facing a critical moment in the match. He had lost the first set 6-2 and was trailing 5-1 in the second set when he chose to withdraw.

During the seventh game of the match, with the score tied at deuce, Heide gained an advantage. Instead of continuing to play, Kicker decided to concede the match by shaking hands with the chair umpire and his opponent.

Kicker, a 33-year-old former world No.78, is known for being the highest-ranked tennis player ever to have been found guilty of match-fixing, resulting in a six-year ban in 2018. The International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) reduced his suspension by three years, with conditions to avoid further violations, after his involvement in fixing two Challenger tournament matches in 2015.

Following an appeal, Kicker’s ban was reduced by four months as he contributed to the ITIA’s educational efforts by creating a video detailing his role in corruption and cautioning other players about the consequences.

Reflecting on his past, Kicker lamented his mistake that led to the suspension, acknowledging the impact it had on his promising career. He admitted to depending on his parents for financial support and shared how he was approached on Facebook by individuals who offered to sponsor him but later revealed themselves as match-fixing syndicate members.

Despite the challenges he faced, Kicker expressed regret for tarnishing his reputation in the tennis world and described the experience of throwing a match as “horrible.”
