“Storm Bram: UK Braces for 90mph Winds, Flooding Risk”

Date:

As Storm Bram approaches the UK with 90mph winds and heavy rain, the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) is advising the public to take precautionary measures. Scheduled to hit on Tuesday and Wednesday, Storm Bram is expected to bring strong winds and intense rainfall. An amber warning has been issued for north-west Scotland, forecasting gusts reaching 90mph, while the already saturated ground in Wales and south-west England poses a risk of flooding.

The severe weather conditions may result in structural damage and disruptions to transportation. Therefore, it is recommended that individuals charge their mobile phones and essential devices in case of power outages. RoSPA also suggests avoiding unnecessary travel, especially in areas under Amber warnings or at risk of flooding.

Yellow warnings cover large parts of the UK, including Wales, south-west England, Northern Ireland, and Scotland, predicting gusts of 50-60mph with localized speeds exceeding 70mph. Combined with heavy rain, this creates hazardous conditions, leading to travel challenges, delays, and potential cancellations.

Staying updated with official weather forecasts and following instructions from local authorities is crucial. Secure outdoor items such as bins, signs, and garden furniture to prevent damage. Prepare an emergency kit with torches, batteries, and non-perishable food items. During severe weather, stay indoors, ensure windows and doors are closed securely, and check on vulnerable neighbors, particularly those living alone or in remote areas.

Reduced visibility and extended braking distances due to rainfall require drivers to lower speed and plan maneuvers ahead. Maintain constant use of windscreen wipers, washers, and dipped headlights. Aquaplaning on wet roads can be avoided by reducing speed, ensuring proper tire pressure, and adequate tread depth. In case of aquaplaning, gently release the accelerator and brakes until traction is regained.

On waterlogged roads, avoid deep water along curbs, do not cross if the depth is unknown, and if necessary, travel slowly in first gear with high engine revs while checking brakes after passing through the water. Avoid flooded areas whenever possible. Steve Cole, RoSPA’s Director of Policy and Impact, emphasizes the importance of securing both outdoor and indoor surroundings during the storm to minimize risks.

Taking simple precautions can protect homes, ensure safe travels, and contribute to community safety during Storm Bram.
