Sky Sports Host Opens Up About Cancer Battle

Date:

Sky Sports host Jo Wilson has shared her harrowing battle with cancer, expressing her deep fear of mortality and the mental preparation for the worst outcome upon receiving the devastating diagnosis. The 41-year-old was informed of her cervical cancer diagnosis in June 2022 following a routine screening. Although she has been cancer-free for two years now, Wilson underwent a challenging journey after discovering that the cancer had spread to her lymph nodes, requiring six weeks of intensive treatment before eventually receiving the all-clear in June 2023.

Having been with Sky Sports since 2011, Wilson underwent a series of treatments including radiotherapy, chemotherapy, and brachytherapy, which is a specialized form of internal radiotherapy. While these treatments were successful in saving her life, they led to early menopause, significantly impacting her career as a presenter.

Wilson’s cancer ordeal came shortly after giving birth to her daughter Mabel in 2020. In a recent Sky Sports News documentary titled “Football, Cancer, and Me,” she recounted the emotional turmoil she experienced during her battle, admitting to keeping her diagnosis private to avoid burdening others despite grappling with thoughts of mortality.

The documentary also features conversations with fellow Sky Sports News colleague Emma Saunders and former manager Tony Mowbray, who shared their own battles with cancer. Mowbray disclosed his bowel cancer diagnosis from the previous year, while Saunders underwent surgery due to a brain infection following a thyroid cancer diagnosis, leaving her partner shocked by the visible aftermath.

Reflecting on the challenges faced during Saunders’ surgery, Mowbray expressed the difficulties of managing a football club from a different country while coping with the emotional strain of the situation. The documentary aims to raise awareness about cancer and encourage prompt medical attention for any concerning symptoms.
