Ryanair has introduced a new non-stop flight route from London Stansted to a Spanish city praised as an ‘underrated’ and ‘hidden gem.’
The low-cost airline will now offer a London to Murcia flight four times weekly, with the trip duration just under three hours. Situated in the southeast of Spain, a little over an hour from Alicante, Murcia is a less explored area. Upon arrival, travelers can opt to explore the city or venture to the nearby coastline.
The timing of this new route is ideal for those seeking a break from the autumn weather. Murcia has experienced temperatures reaching 31C this week, with November highs up to 21C. Although not the warmest destination in December and January, with daytime highs of 18C and 17C respectively, the weather tends to be mild with minimal rainfall. It is advisable to pack warm sleepwear as nights can get chilly.
The city of Murcia boasts a plethora of attractions, making it a must-visit for history enthusiasts. Steeped in history from Roman and Moorish settlements, highlights include Murcia Cathedral, a striking Gothic structure dominating the skyline, and the Santa Clara Museum, once a Muslim palace transformed into a Monastery in the 14th century.
Visitors can also explore various museums such as the Museo Arqueológico de Murcia, showcasing valuable artifacts, and the Salzillo Museum, honoring the renowned sculptor Francisco Salzillo, known for his religious masterpieces.
Murcia offers excellent shopping opportunities. The expansive Centro Comercial Nueva Condomina features popular Spanish and European brands, while Centro De Artesania De Murcia offers a selection of handcrafted artisanal products ideal for gifts. National Geographic has hailed Murcia as ‘underrated.’
Just a short journey from the airport lies the port city of Cartagena, known for its Roman Amphitheatre and historical sites like the Roman Forum Museum and the ancient Punic wall dating back to the 3rd century BC.
Cartagena is also a fantastic beach destination. Cala Cortina, a pristine beach encircled by rugged cliffs, boasts soft sands and calm waters suitable for swimming.
Another nearby beach hotspot is La Manga, approximately half an hour from the airport. This unique location stretches along a narrow strip, 13 miles long and only 100 meters wide, with a lagoon on one side and the Mediterranean Sea on the other. Visitors can enjoy the long sandy beach with most hotel rooms offering picturesque sea or lagoon views. Additionally, there is a sizable marina with several restaurants and boat rental services for water activities.
Whether planning a city escape or a beach retreat, considering Murcia over more mainstream Spanish cities is worthwhile. Despite its historical charm and proximity to stunning beaches, Murcia attracted only 1.16 million visitors last year compared to Barcelona’s 26 million. As tourist numbers rise, it is advisable to schedule a visit before it becomes a bustling tourist hub.
Direct flights to Murcia are available from various UK airports starting this October for as low as £15.
