“Facebook Sperm Donation Caution: Woman Shares Risky Journey”

Date:

A woman, Laura Coldman, shared her experience of obtaining sperm from a stranger on Facebook for free, expressing no regrets but cautioning against the method. Laura, aged 33, sought a sibling for her six-year-old child after becoming single in August 2018. In June 2020, she turned to Facebook for a sperm donor and received an offer from a donor two months later after positive reviews from a private chat group on mothers who had used sperm donation.

The donor, based in Sheffield, South Yorkshire, was visited by Laura for self-insemination, undergoing three more donations before confirming her pregnancy in July 2021. Her son, Calum Anthony Ryan, was born in April 2022, weighing 8lbs 8oz at Royal Infirmary Hospital, Leicester. Although Laura cherishes her son, she now realizes the risks involved in using Facebook for sperm donation, citing concerns about the unknown background of the donor, including potential criminal or mental health issues.

Laura, a liaison officer from Leicester, East Midlands, initially viewed the Facebook group as a joke but later embraced it after thorough research. Despite the successful pregnancy, Laura advises against this method due to the lack of information available about the donors. She emphasized the uncertainties of the donor’s past and medical history, expressing her relief for having her son but cautioning others to consider the risks involved.

Reflecting on her experience, Laura described the unconventional process of obtaining the donor’s sperm at his home, highlighting the emotional journey leading to Calum’s birth. She expressed concerns about her son’s complex needs, including non-verbal communication and potential neurodivergent traits, which she attributes to the donor. Laura concluded by advising potential donors to exercise caution and conduct thorough research before proceeding with such arrangements.

NHS guidelines for sperm donors stipulate requirements for donors to be in good health, aged between 18 and 46, free from serious medical conditions, and undergo screenings for infectious diseases and genetic disorders. Donations to support Laura and Calum can be made through their GoFundMe page.
