“Qualify for Car Tax Exemption: What You Need to Know”

Date:

Drivers may qualify for car tax exemption under specific conditions. Car tax, also known as Vehicle Excise Duty, is typically an annual obligation, although there are options for payment installment. The standard rate for cars registered after April 2017, excluding first-year rates for new vehicles, stands at £195 per year.

Different car tax rates apply to vehicles registered between March 1, 2001, and March 31, 2017. Rates range from £20 annually for vehicles emitting up to 100g/km of CO2 to £760 annually for those emitting over 255g/km of CO2.

Individuals receiving certain disability benefits, like PIP, can qualify for up to 100% car tax exemption, particularly when receiving higher benefit rates. Standard rate recipients receive a 50% discount, applicable to one vehicle at a time.

Furthermore, vehicles used by organizations to transport disabled individuals are also exempt from car tax, excluding ambulances. Vehicles manufactured before January 1, 1985, are not subject to car tax. Mobility vehicles and powered wheelchairs with specific speed limitations are also exempt.

For vehicles not in use and kept off public roads, drivers can apply for a Statutory Off Road Notification (SORN) to waive road tax obligations. Recent announcements indicate changes in fuel duty rates and the introduction of per-mile charges for electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles in the coming years. Fuel duty is distinct from car tax and is included in pump prices, subject to a 20% VAT charge.
