“Top-Value UK City Break in Hidden Gem Wells, Somerset”

Date:

City breaks have become more costly recently, and even a staycation within the UK can strain your finances. Fortunately, there are still destinations that provide good value for money if you’re seeking a getaway.

Avoiding the main tourist hubs is generally the key to finding a budget-friendly city break. A city in Somerset, not typically on most people’s travel radar, has been rated as the top-value UK city break by Which?, scoring 86%.

Wells in Somerset has outshined competitors like Liverpool and Lincoln, earning four-star ratings for value for money, cultural sites, tourist attractions, and accommodation. Surprisingly, you can still book a hotel room for under £100 per night, a rarity as prices soar nationwide.

As England’s smallest city, Wells is brimming with charm and attractions within a walkable area. Its city status was granted in the 1970s largely due to the magnificent Wells Cathedral, a gothic masterpiece that houses The Bishop’s Palace & Gardens. Visitors can explore the medieval palace and its 14-acre gardens teeming with wildlife such as swans and deer.

Connected to the cathedral is Vicars’ Close, said to be Europe’s oldest residential street with original buildings intact. Strolling around Wells feels like a journey back in time, with the High Street lined with delightful independent shops.

Wells boasts numerous cozy historic pubs for unwinding after a day of sightseeing. The Crown, dating back to the 15th century, exudes a welcoming atmosphere, while The City Arms, established in 1606, transitioned from a former jail to a pub and inn.

Ideal for a weekend of hiking, Wells is home to the National Trust site Ebbor Gorge National Nature Reserve offering breathtaking views of the Mendip Hills. The reserve features three trails, including a challenging 1.9-mile route with rocky terrain but rewarding vistas.

Just a short drive away are the Wookey Hole caves, where visitors can explore the stunning caves, partake in activities like climbing, and visit the museum detailing the caves’ history. The site also houses Dinosaur Valley, a prehistoric-themed park with lifelike animatronic dinosaurs and family-friendly trails.

Wells hosts weekly markets on Wednesdays and Saturdays, with festive events leading up to Christmas. Notable events include an Artisan Christmas Market at the Bishop’s Palace and a Christmas market at the Market Place and Cathedral Green, featuring over 100 stalls offering festive food, gifts, and live music.

For an affordable staycation option, consider a trip to Wells. This underrated historic city offers a quieter alternative to nearby Bath or Bristol, providing a relaxing weekend retreat.
