At an upcoming investment summit in Toronto, Prime Minister Mark Carney will present 167 potential investment opportunities, including a floating LNG terminal on B.C.’s coast, a high-speed rail line between Edmonton and Calgary, and a pipeline from Alberta to the Pacific Ocean. These opportunities, detailed in a 66-page prospectus obtained by CBC News, aim to attract $1 trillion in investment.
The summit, scheduled for September 14 and 15 and organized in collaboration with the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board and Public Sector Pension Investment Board, will bring together international investors and Canadian business leaders. The invitation list includes major investment firms and sovereign wealth funds, as part of efforts to attract capital amid trade disruptions and global uncertainties.
With the U.S.-Canada trade conflict intensifying, there is a growing need to strengthen economic connections beyond the United States. The investment prospects cover various sectors, such as conventional and clean energy, mining, marine infrastructure, digital technology, manufacturing, and transportation.
Noteworthy projects in the prospectus include a $57-billion US expansion of the Port of Churchill, a $44-billion investment in Nova Scotia’s Wind West offshore wind project, a $35-billion West Coast oil pipeline, and a $28.5-billion Ksi Lisims LNG terminal project. The document also outlines plans for a $10.9-billion high-speed rail line between Calgary and Edmonton and a $35-billion oil pipeline from Alberta to British Columbia.
Moreover, initiatives in clean energy, artificial intelligence, and quantum computing are highlighted as areas of potential investment. The prospectus positions Canada as a leader in AI, with opportunities like a $14.5-billion data center in Alberta and investments in Toronto-based Xanadu Quantum Technologies.
However, some projects like the Alto high-speed rail project and airport privatization plans are notably absent from the list. The investment summit aims to showcase these opportunities to attract both domestic and international investors, fostering economic growth and diversification in Canada.
