Marie-Yasmine Alidou secured the decisive goal from a penalty kick in the 55th minute, propelling the Montreal Roses to a 2-0 victory over AFC Toronto in Northern Super League action this past Sunday. Elyse Bennett contributed to the Roses’ success with her ninth goal of the season, providing additional cushion for the team, currently holding the second position with a record of 9-4-3. This match marked the debut of interim head coach Maryse Bard-Martel for the Roses.
Despite a strong effort from Shelina Zadorsky, who appeared to equalize for the third-place Toronto team (7-5-4) in the 68th minute, her goal was disallowed due to an offside decision. Roses’ goalkeeper Anna Karpenko delivered an outstanding performance, facing a total of 20 shots with nine on target, ultimately securing a clean sheet for her team.
On the opposing side, Toronto’s goalkeeper Sabrina D’Angelo faced seven shots, with five on target. The Roses took to the field for the first time since parting ways with head coach Robert Rositoiu following a surprising 1-0 defeat to semi-professional side Simcoe County in the W Canadian Championship.
This match showcased the Roses’ resilience and determination under new coaching leadership, setting a positive tone for their future performances in the league.
