McLaren has publicly expressed regret to their drivers, Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, following their disqualification from the Las Vegas Grand Prix. Despite finishing in second and fourth place, the team was summoned by race officials due to potential issues with the skid width on the rear of their cars.
In a statement from McLaren team principal Andrea Stella, it was acknowledged that the team had violated Technical Regulations Article 3.5.9, which mandates a minimum skid thickness of 9mm. Car 4 exceeded this limit by 0.12mm, while Car 81 exceeded it by 0.26mm.
The team explained that during the race, both cars unexpectedly experienced significant porpoising, leading to increased contact with the ground. They are investigating the reasons behind this behavior, including accidental damage to the cars that resulted in heightened floor movement.
McLaren emphasized that the breach was unintentional, with no deliberate attempt to flout regulations, and highlighted mitigating circumstances. They offered apologies to Norris and Piastri for the loss of points, recognizing the impact on their championship campaigns. The team also extended apologies to their supporters and partners.
Despite the disappointment, McLaren remains focused on the remaining two races of the season. The disqualification has reshaped the Drivers’ World Championship standings, with Norris maintaining his lead and Verstappen now posing a challenge to Piastri for second place. The upcoming races in Qatar and Abu Dhabi promise to be crucial in determining the final outcome of the season.
Both Norris and Piastri expressed their disappointment over the disqualification, setting the stage for intense competition in the concluding races of the 2025 season. The championship battle is expected to intensify, with all eyes on the competitors’ performances and strategic decisions in the pivotal races ahead.
