In a thrilling finish at the inaugural Ontario Honda Dealers Indy in Markham, Marcus Ericsson secured victory with two crucial passes. Initially, Ericsson and teammate Will Power made contact while jostling for position late in the race. Then, with just four laps remaining on the Markham street circuit, Ericsson overtook Romain Grosjean to claim his fifth win in the IndyCar series.
Expressing his satisfaction, Ericsson attributed the win to superior speed and strategic driving, emphasizing the team’s ability to perform when it mattered most. Grosjean finished in second place, marking his first top-five result this year, while Power secured third place and current driver standings leader Alex Palou came in fourth.
Ericsson, Power, and Kyle Kirkwood, who holds the second spot in the driver rankings, all belong to the Andretti Global team. When Kirkwood exited the race due to a crash, the team’s focus shifted to preventing Palou from gaining more points to secure his fifth IndyCar title.
Despite encountering some miscommunication, the team strategized to challenge Palou effectively. Palou earned 32 points in the race, extending his lead over Kirkwood in the standings to 133 points.
Grosjean, who was struggling with fuel and tire concerns, was overtaken by Ericsson towards the end of the race. Despite the challenges, Ericsson successfully navigated the tight circuit and executed the crucial pass on Grosjean to clinch the victory.
The event saw several dramatic moments, with six caution periods and multiple cars forced out due to collisions. The race marked the first time that Markham hosted the sole IndyCar event in Canada, following its relocation from Toronto’s Exhibition Place after a longstanding tradition.
Amidst the challenges faced during the event, Ericsson praised the track’s layout and the enthusiastic support from fans, expressing confidence that future races in Markham would run more smoothly with increased experience and preparation.
