Legal organizations have accused members of the Conservative Party and Reform politicians of using language that is deemed irresponsible and risky, thereby endangering lawyers. Six legal bodies, representing a total of 250,000 lawyers, have jointly expressed serious concerns about the rhetoric directed towards legal professionals in the course of their duties.
The criticism arises following a controversial speech by Robert Jenrick, a prominent figure in the Conservative Party, during which he theatrically brandished a judge’s wig, vowing to prevent any political activists from assuming judicial roles. This move was met with strong disapproval from the government, citing actions that undermine British values and threaten the fundamental institutions of the country.
Additionally, there have been discussions about dismantling the independent body responsible for setting guidelines for judges and magistrates in England and Wales, with claims from Kemi Badenoch, another Conservative leader, about the presence of “activist lawyers.” Allegations of a two-tier justice system have also been recurrently made by the Tories and Reform UK.
In response to perceived threats and attacks on legal professionals and their families, various legal bodies, including the Bar Council of England and Wales, the Law Society of England and Wales, and others, issued a joint statement expressing worries over the escalating intimidation faced by those working within the justice system.
The statement emphasized the importance of respecting the independence of the judiciary and the crucial role of lawyers in providing fair representation to clients. It condemned politically motivated assaults on the legal profession as detrimental to public trust in the rule of law and democracy, citing instances of violence, threats, and vandalism directed at legal professionals.
The legal bodies stressed that lawyers are not synonymous with their clients and underscored the principle that all individuals are entitled to access the justice system. They reminded politicians that no one is exempt from the law’s reach and protections.
