Kemi Badenoch has declined to criticize her leadership contender Robert Jenrick for his statement about not seeing any other white individuals during a visit to Birmingham.
Badenoch characterized the remark, which surfaced from a secret recording obtained by The Guardian, as a “statement of fact.” Jenrick faced accusations of racism for his comment following a brief visit to Handsworth in Birmingham to shoot a video.
During an appearance on BBC Breakfast, the Conservative leader suggested taking the report “with a grain of salt” and added, “These are recordings taken out of context. I am unaware of the prior discussions leading to that statement.”
He further defended the comment, stating, “If he mentioned not encountering another white individual, it may have been an observation. Making observations is not inappropriate.”
Both Badenoch and Jenrick expressed concerns about insufficient integration and the presence of separate communities. Badenoch rejected accusations of racism against Jenrick, criticizing what she perceived as divisive politics among certain MPs in Birmingham.
Jenrick reportedly expressed his discontent with the lack of integration during a dinner at the Aldridge-Brownhills Conservative Association in March. He described his visit to Handsworth in Birmingham as shocking due to the poor state and lack of integration, emphasizing the importance of people living together regardless of skin color or faith.
Independent MP Ayoub Khan of the area disputed Jenrick’s claims, labeling them as inaccurate and irresponsible. Khan attributed the visible issues in the community to years of austerity measures and mismanagement by successive governments.
Georgie Laming from Hope Not Hate criticized Jenrick for potentially fueling division with his remarks, cautioning against speaking negatively about communities, which could benefit far-right groups.
