Michael Smith made a heartfelt comeback to the spotlight, shedding tears during an interview after enduring chronic health challenges. The reigning 2023 world champion reappeared on TV screens for the first time since March to compete against Nathan Aspinall at the Grand Slam of Darts.
In a rematch of their 2022 final, Smith, known as Bullyboy, secured a 5-3 victory as Aspinall faltered with 20 missed double attempts. The win held special significance for Smith, who grappled with various health setbacks throughout the year, including arthritis in his throwing hand, foot, ankle, and shoulder issues, along with laser eye surgery.
His return to the limelight carried immense weight for the St Helens star, who emotionally shared his journey in an interview with Viaplay before opting out of the standard winners’ press conference for his well-being.
Reflecting on his performance, Smith acknowledged the struggle he faced, admitting that Aspinall should have clinched the win easily. Despite the odds, Smith persevered and clinched the victory, acknowledging the significance of getting back on track in his career.
Expressing his resilience amidst health challenges, Smith emphasized his fighting spirit and determination to compete and win matches. Overwhelmed with emotion, he expressed a desire to be actively competing rather than watching from the sidelines, highlighting the joy of being back on the big stage and engaging with enthusiastic crowds.
The former world No.1 affirmed his commitment to the sport, citing past instances of overcoming adversities, including injuries, as testaments to his resilience. Looking ahead, Smith is set to face current world No.1 Luke Humphries in his upcoming Grand Slam match before concluding the group stage against Alex Spellman, with the top two advancing to the knockout rounds.
