A prosecutor informed jurors that a former street gang leader masterminded the 1996 drive-by shooting of rap icon Tupac Shakur in Las Vegas as payback for his nephew’s assault. Duane (Keffe D) Davis, 63, faces a murder charge in Clark County, Nevada, for allegedly leading a group of men to kill Shakur, 25, near the Las Vegas Strip. The prosecutor emphasized Davis’s role in arming the shooters for retribution, citing Davis’s own recent public statements that reignited interest in the long-dormant case.
Defense counsel Michael Sanft argued that after 30 years, there is scant evidence to support the prosecution’s case, dismissing Davis’s accounts as unreliable and unverifiable. Shakur’s tragic death contributed to the narrative of violence in hip-hop culture, fueling the East Coast-West Coast rap rivalry during that era.
Police disclosed that Davis, a longtime suspect in the murder, was only charged after making self-incriminating statements in 2023. The trial, presided over by Judge Carli Kierny, is anticipated to last six weeks and may feature testimony from Marion (Suge) Knight, a co-founder of Death Row Records. Authorities depicted Davis as the orchestrator of a revenge plot following a confrontation between rival street gangs at the MGM Grand casino.
Davis allegedly procured the murder weapon and directed the attack on Shakur’s vehicle, resulting in the fatal shooting of Shakur and minor injuries to Knight. Davis’s admissions in interviews and his memoir, “Compton Street Legend,” played a pivotal role in rekindling the investigation. Nevada law permits charging Davis with murder even if he did not physically commit the shooting.
Tupac Shakur enthusiast O’Ron Gordy expressed skepticism about uncovering the truth surrounding Shakur’s demise. Meanwhile, Davis implicated himself in the murders of Shakur and another rapper, Christopher Wallace, in his book, linking the killings in a web of unresolved violence and speculation within the rap industry.
