The British Columbia commanding officer of the RCMP has been relieved of his position due to unspecified allegations dating back to 2016-2018, as announced by the RCMP. Dwayne McDonald has been replaced by John Brewer, who previously led B.C.’s extortion task force.
The statement from RCMP Commissioner Mike Duheme mentioned that further details on the allegations will not be disclosed at this time. However, Duheme assured the public that RCMP operations and policing services in the province will not be affected.
The allegations are currently under investigation and were recently brought to the attention of the RCMP. McDonald, who previously served as the top cop at the Surrey RCMP and as the RCMP’s criminal operations officer overseeing federal and organized crime investigations in B.C., had his bio removed from the RCMP’s senior executive committee page.
John Brewer, the newly appointed interim commanding officer of E Division and deputy commissioner, was praised in the RCMP statement by Duheme, who expressed full confidence in Brewer as a respected member of the RCMP’s senior leadership team. Brewer, a former assistant commissioner with the RCMP, will now lead the B.C. RCMP in an interim capacity.
