El Niño, a significant component of the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) cycle, influences ocean temperatures and atmospheric wind patterns in the central Pacific region. The ongoing “super” El Niño has suppressed Atlantic hurricane development.
Forecasters have issued an El Niño advisory, with indications pointing to a potentially historic event. Meteorologist Lindsey Long from the Climate Prediction Center at NOAA projects record-breaking anomalies, possibly exceeding the 2.4°C anomaly recorded in 1982-1983.
The Pacific Ocean has experienced heightened hurricane activity, with 16 named storms thus far. In contrast, the Atlantic saw Tropical Storm Fay nearly reach hurricane strength, disrupted by strong wind shear attributed to El Niño.
While El Niño dampens Atlantic hurricane formation, it has led to brief tropical storms in the Gulf of Mexico, impacting coastal regions like Louisiana. The El Niño pattern is expected to peak in late 2026 and extend into 2027, with implications for future hurricane seasons remaining uncertain.
Despite the quiet Atlantic season, the potential for hurricane development persists, particularly in the Gulf of Mexico and along the U.S. East Coast. As the El Niño event subsides, its aftermath may influence the conditions for the following year’s hurricane season, although predictions are yet to be determined.
