“easyJet Passenger Challenges Bag Fine, Wins Refund”

Date:

An easyJet traveler shared her experience of challenging the airline over a fine for an oversized bag.

Louise Machin expressed surprise and confusion when easyJet staff charged her €58 (£51) upon returning from Chania Airport in Crete, claiming her suitcase exceeded the size limit despite her prior checks. Following her persistence and contacting the bag manufacturer, easyJet reimbursed the fee.

Ms. Machin, a 59-year-old from Crystal Palace, encountered a common issue where passengers are unfairly penalized for oversized cabin bags due to inconsistencies with airport bag sizers, as highlighted by consumer group Which?.

Despite careful scrutiny of bag dimensions, travelers are advised to double-check regulations and utilize airport sizers at check-in or boarding. Ms. Machin’s ordeal occurred during a trip to Crete, where she faced resistance from ground staff over her compliant bag, leading to her paying the fine to facilitate her return journey.

Upon verifying her bag’s compliance with easyJet’s standards through the manufacturer, Cabin Max, Ms. Machin secured a refund from the airline. Cabin Max has faced similar complaints about bag sizer inaccuracies, causing unwarranted fines for passengers.

Instances of airlines wrongly penalizing passengers for minor bag deviations, such as protruding handles, have been reported, with Ryanair even incentivizing staff to enforce strict bag rules.

Which? recommends appealing fines for travelers confident in their bag’s compliance. Despite easyJet’s assertion of no sizer faults, they refunded Ms. Machin and assured case-by-case review of customer feedback.

According to easyJet, their standardized bag sizers and procedures aim to maintain cabin bag dimensions consistently across all airports, addressing any reported issues promptly. They apologized to Ms. Machin and refunded her, emphasizing their commitment to customer satisfaction.
