Met Éireann has officially designated the approaching severe weather as Storm Bram, prompting Brits to prepare for challenging conditions. Today, yellow weather alerts have been issued for strong winds and heavy rainfall, with parts of the UK set to experience gusts of up to 85mph in the coming days.
The Met Office has issued the warnings, cautioning the public about potential floods and high winds. Rainfall amounts of 80-90 mm are anticipated in some areas, with localized areas possibly receiving up to 100 mm.
The initial weather warnings will take effect this afternoon, with disruptions expected until Wednesday. Areas in Wales and southwest England are likely to face persistent and intense rainfall starting from 6pm today.
A yellow warning is in place for 24 hours in the region, with forecasters predicting accumulations of 20-40 mm in many areas, escalating to 60-80 mm over Dartmoor and high terrain in Wales. There is a slight chance of 80-100 mm in the most exposed hills, potentially leading to localized flooding and transport interruptions due to the saturated ground and accompanying strong southerly winds.
Simultaneously, a wind warning covers the west coast of Wales, Cornwall, and Devon, where delays in road, rail, air, and ferry services are expected. Additional warnings, including an amber wind alert for Scotland, are scheduled for the upcoming days, with rain and wind impacts predicted across various regions.
Residents are advised to secure loose items outdoors, as gusts are expected to reach high speeds, potentially causing travel hazards. The Met Office urges vigilance and preparedness to mitigate risks associated with Storm Bram.
