Ukrainian authorities revealed on Wednesday that they are investigating high-ranking officials in President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s administration. This development follows the recent dismissal of the country’s defense minister, who advocated for national elections amid the ongoing conflict with Russia.
The investigation targets an alleged criminal network led by a current and former lawmaker, with involvement from officials in the president’s office and other individuals. Additional information about the operation will be disclosed later, according to a joint statement from Ukraine’s National Anti-Corruption Bureau and the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office.
Although Zelenskyy has not commented publicly on the probe, he did issue a decree removing Iryna Mudra from her position as deputy head of the president’s office. This investigation poses a new challenge to Zelenskyy’s leadership, following previous controversies within his administration.
Last year, Zelenskyy’s chief of staff, Andriy Yermak, resigned and later became a suspect in a significant corruption investigation. The recent dismissal of Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov, a key ally of Zelenskyy, has also raised concerns within the government.
In response to Fedorov’s removal, Ukraine’s parliament approved the appointment of Yevhenii Khmara as the new defense minister. Zelenskyy nominated Khmara, who had been serving as acting minister since Fedorov’s ousting in July.
Fedorov, in a video message posted online, called for elections in Ukraine, highlighting governance issues and corruption that have hindered the country’s ability to confront the ongoing conflict. These developments come amid Ukraine’s recent military successes, including drone attacks on Russian targets and disruptions to enemy advances.
Despite these victories, Ukraine continues to face challenges in international peace efforts and defense capabilities. As tensions persist with Russia, both countries have experienced drone attacks resulting in casualties. The situation remains fluid as Ukraine navigates internal political turmoil and external military confrontations.
