Canada’s women’s flag football team emerged victorious over the United States to claim the world title, while the men’s team secured a spot at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics during the International Federation of American Football (IFAF) world championships held in Düsseldorf, Germany. The women’s team, who had already secured a spot with a 20-6 victory over top-ranked Mexico in the semifinals, concluded a flawless tournament by defeating the Americans 27-20 in the final match.

Frederique Morneau shone with three touchdown receptions for Canada, while quarterback Sara Parker connected with Caroline Moquin-Joubert for another score. Parker, with a total of 23 touchdown passes, was honored as the most valuable player of the women’s tournament.

On the other hand, the Canadian men’s team also excelled, securing their place at the 2028 Olympics with a 34-26 triumph over Mexico in the third-place playoff. Quarterback Michael O’Connor led the charge with 294 passing yards and five touchdowns. Former NFL tight end Antony Auclair made a significant impact with 149 receiving yards and two touchdown catches from O’Connor. Daniel Petermann also found the end zone twice, with James Drysdale contributing another score.

The top two teams from both flag football events, excluding the U.S. as the host nation, earned qualification for the Los Angeles Olympics, marking the sport’s Olympic debut. Despite a loss to Italy in the men’s semifinals, Canada clinched their Olympic berth by defeating Mexico in the third-place match.

Head coach Paul LaPolice commended the team’s performance, stating, “We came to win, and this group delivered. Qualifying for the Olympics is a result of hard work and dedication, and I’m proud of our athletes’ determination.” LaPolice highlighted the significance of both the men’s and women’s teams qualifying simultaneously, indicating a promising future for Canadian flag football.

In the men’s final, the U.S. emerged victorious over Italy with a score of 42-26, showcasing the competitive nature of the championship.
