“Britain Braces for Up to Six Inches of Snow Before New Year’s Eve”

Date:

Britain is expected to see significant snowfall towards the end of the year, with weather models indicating up to six inches of snow could accumulate before New Year’s Eve. The latest GFS weather model displays a substantial area of snow moving westwards over the British Isles, with snowfall projected to commence as early as 6am on December 30. The initial regions likely to witness snow settling on the ground are Scotland and the northern parts of England, including Aberdeen and Newcastle.

Anticipated snowfall by 6am includes lighter accumulations in Newcastle and potentially severe conditions in northeast Scotland. Snow depth forecasts indicate Aberdeen might experience up to three inches of snow in the morning, with a sharp increase in snow depths by midday, especially in areas north of Dundee and Aberdeenshire, where totals could surpass five inches. The most heavily affected areas could accumulate up to six inches of snow, affecting cities like Manchester, Stoke-on-Trent, and Birmingham.

Further southward, snow is predicted to spread through the afternoon and evening, with cities such as Middlesbrough, York, and potentially Leeds likely to see snow settling. The North York Moors is also highlighted as an area at risk of continuous snowfall. By evening, Newcastle, Middlesbrough, and York may have around three inches of snow, while Scotland remains in the path of more intense and persistent snowfall.

The data indicates that snow could extend to southern regions and Wales, with lighter snowfall expected in East Anglia, Kent, Essex, and even London. Snow is forecasted to persist into December 31, with the heaviest snowfall expected in northern areas, particularly Newcastle.

This forecast follows the Met Office’s earlier prediction of potential snowfall during the Christmas week. Deputy Chief Forecaster Tom Crabtree mentioned that while temperatures may drop, significant cold weather is less likely, with a chance of wintry showers in the east during the Christmas period.
