A groundbreaking aircraft set to transform air travel has recently received a significant boost. Scheduled to commence commercial flights in 2029, the Airlander 10, priced at £60 million per unit and measuring 92 meters in length, will claim the title of the world’s largest aircraft. Hybrid Air Vehicles, the company behind the Airlander 10, has announced a collaboration with UK-American company ZeroAvia to equip the aircraft with hydrogen-electric engines. This technological advancement will drastically reduce emissions, potentially cutting them down to as low as 1-2% of those produced by conventional kerosene-powered commercial planes.
Initially dubbed ‘the flying bum’ due to its distinctive shape, the Airlander 10 has undergone significant developments since its first flight in 2010. George Land, reflecting on the aircraft’s evolution, humorously embraces the playful nickname despite never personally witnessing it. The updated version of the Airlander 10, expected to take flight in 2029, promises a sleeker design, as noted by Hannah Cunningham, the head of marketing.
With plans to construct the new Airlander 10 at a facility in Doncaster within the next 12 to 18 months, Hybrid Air Vehicles envisions a future where this colossal aircraft revolutionizes air travel. Featuring amenities like a stylish bar and private double bedrooms, the Airlander 10 aims to offer passengers a luxurious and serene flying experience, departing from the traditional cramped and noisy cabins of commercial jets.
