Summer McIntosh clinched her first gold medal at the Pan Pacific swimming competition by setting a championship record in the women’s 400-metre individual medley in Irvine, Calif. McIntosh outpaced Jenna Forrester of Australia, finishing the race in four minutes, 28.01 seconds. Forrester secured the silver medal with a time of 4:31.50, while Agostina Hein from Argentina claimed bronze in 4:32.54.
McIntosh expressed her satisfaction with her performance, acknowledging that she aimed for an even better outcome but was pleased to secure victory for Canada. Following her win, the Canadian national anthem resonated through the crowd, drawing immense excitement from the spectators, especially a group of enthusiastic youngsters in the stands.
Later in the evening, McIntosh contributed to Canada’s success in the women’s 4×200 freestyle relay, helping the team secure a bronze medal alongside her teammates. The Canadian team, with Mary-Sophie Harvey swimming the opening leg, finished with a time of 7:52.74. Australia claimed the gold with a championship-record time of 7:42.40, followed by the United States at 7:43.10.
In other events, Tristan Jankovics and Lorne Wigginton represented Canada in the men’s 400 IM, finishing 7th and 8th, respectively. Japan’s Tomoyuki Matsushita set a new championship record with a winning time of 4:06.75. Additionally, Taylor Ruck achieved a fifth-place finish in the women’s 100 freestyle.
The competition also saw impressive performances from other Canadian swimmers, including Alexanne Lepage and Sophie Angus in the women’s 100 breaststroke. McKenzie Siroky of the U.S. claimed the top spot in the event.
Various Canadian athletes participated in different events, with notable results such as Ingrid Wilm finishing 5th in the women’s 50m backstroke, Oliver Dawson securing 6th place in the men’s 100 breaststroke, and Javier Acevedo coming in 8th in the men’s 50 backstroke. Additionally, Canadian relay teams also showcased their talent, with Canada finishing 4th in the men’s 200m freestyle relay and 6th in the men’s 200 free relay.
