University of Waterloo doctoral candidate Kaveeshan Thurairajah, while not a Nobel Prize recipient, was recently awarded an Ig Nobel Prize. This satirical award acknowledges unconventional and innovative research within academia. Thurairajah and his team were honored with the Ig Nobel Physics Prize for their work on creating a urinal that minimizes splashing.
The moment Thurairajah’s supervisor informed him of the achievement, he was elated. The team designed various urinal prototypes, such as the Nautilus and Cornucopia, to determine the most effective splash-free model. According to Thurairajah, the Nautilus design excelled in reducing splashing and ease of cleaning compared to the Cornucopia.
Attending the ceremony in Zurich, the scientists were clad in bright yellow raincoats, prepared for recognition among their eccentric peers. Thurairajah emphasized that their experiments did not involve actual urine splashing due to hygiene and scientific accuracy concerns. Instead, they developed a machine to simulate urine flow rates accurately.
Despite the whimsical nature of their research, Thurairajah highlighted the societal benefits of improving restroom facilities in public spaces. The study’s outcomes were published in the journal PNAS Nexus.
Furthermore, Canadian researchers were celebrated at the event for varied studies, including one from the University of Toronto on unethical behavior related to stealing candy from children. McGill University scientists were also recognized for their innovation in using mosquito proboscises for high-resolution 3D printing.
The Ig Nobel Prizes, organized by Annals of Improbable Research, relocated to Europe after 35 years in the U.S. due to visa concerns. Thurairajah emphasized the importance of an international scientific community for collaboration and progress, stating it would be a disservice to exclude fellow researchers from such events.
