The head of Russia’s singular anti-war party has affirmed his commitment to remaining in the country and advocating for change, notwithstanding escalating pressure from the authorities resulting in the party’s exclusion from the upcoming parliamentary elections. The Supreme Court decision to disallow the post-Soviet liberal party Yabloko from participating in the September vote reflects concerns by the authorities that the party’s stance on ending the prolonged conflict in Ukraine resonates with voters.
Leader Nikolai Rybakov emphasized the significance of the widespread public support over the court ruling, citing the vocal dissent expressed by hundreds of supporters outside the court premises. Yabloko, previously a prominent voice in parliament and a government critic, now holds only a few regional seats and lacks representation in the State Duma, which is predominantly controlled by the Putin-backed United Russia party.
While United Russia is anticipated to maintain its dominance in the impending elections, Rybakov expressed confidence in Yabloko’s potential as a contender if permitted to participate. The party is contesting the Supreme Court’s ruling, which was based on allegations of undisclosed campaign backing from Western sources, among other accusations that Yabloko denies.
Rybakov, a 47-year-old opposition figure, reiterated his determination to remain in Russia despite stringent censorship laws and wartime regulations that have prompted many dissenting voices to flee or face prosecution. However, recent data from the Levada Center revealed a decline in support for Russia’s military actions in Ukraine. Rybakov highlighted the growing support for Yabloko’s peace-focused agenda, underscoring the desire within Russian society to end the conflict.

Rybakov remains resolute in his stance, asserting that the shared beliefs of millions of individuals aligned with Yabloko’s vision cannot be suppressed by coercive measures or restrictions imposed by the authorities.
