Israeli Airstrikes Kill 11 in Southern Lebanon

Date:

Israeli airstrikes in southern Lebanon resulted in the deaths of at least 11 individuals on Saturday, marking some of the most lethal attacks since a delicate truce between Israel and Hezbollah was implemented in June. The Lebanese Health Ministry and state news agency reported that one airstrike on the outskirts of Ansar village claimed seven lives, including three children, and injured two others. Another airstrike in Deir al-Zahrani village led to the deaths of four individuals and left 17 wounded.

An agreement termed as a “framework agreement” was reached between Israel and the Lebanese government on June 26. This agreement outlined a plan for the withdrawal of Israeli forces from southern Lebanon in exchange for the disarmament of Hezbollah, a militant group supported by Iran. The agreement also aimed at progressing towards a potential peace deal between the two nations, which have technically been in a state of war for nearly 80 years. However, Hezbollah, which did not participate in the agreement, declined direct negotiations.

Prime Minister Nawaf Salam condemned the Israeli airstrikes in southern Lebanon, asserting that they instill fear among residents and hinder efforts to establish stability in the region. He emphasized that the victims of the airstrikes were not part of any military infrastructure and stressed the responsibility of the Lebanese state in handling such matters. President Joseph Aoun viewed the airstrikes as a hindrance to ongoing negotiation efforts and American initiatives aimed at implementing the agreement.

Despite the truce, Israeli military operations have persisted in the region, with intense airstrikes targeting the strategic Ali Taher hill and surrounding areas. The Israeli military justified its actions as responses to provocations against its soldiers, vowing to defend Israeli civilians and soldiers from harm. In contrast, Hezbollah called for the Lebanese government to halt the aggression, cautioning against pursuing talks with Israel under U.S. sponsorship, which they viewed as detrimental.

The recent escalation follows the deaths of two Israeli soldiers in a southern Lebanon explosion, marking the first Israeli casualties since the truce. Lebanon and Israel have engaged in several rounds of talks, with Hezbollah maintaining its refusal to disarm and criticizing the Lebanese government for perceived concessions without ensuring an Israeli withdrawal.

The conflict between Israel and Hezbollah reignited in early March, resulting in over 4,000 fatalities in Lebanon, including numerous civilians. On the Israeli side, around 40 soldiers and three civilians, including a military contractor, have lost their lives. Both sides continue to grapple with the complexities of the longstanding conflict and the pursuit of lasting peace.
