A company in Saskatchewan is exploring the extraction of hydrogen from underground sources on a commercial scale, aiming to move away from traditional fossil fuel-based production methods. Regina-based Max Power Mining recently initiated drilling at the Lawson Complex in southern Saskatchewan, marking its third well in the area. The company envisions establishing the world’s first large-scale commercial natural hydrogen system, offering a new primary energy source.
President and director of Max Power Mining, Chad Levesque, emphasized the importance of hydrogen as a key element in various industrial processes such as ammonia production and refining petroleum. He highlighted the necessity for a more environmentally friendly sourcing method for hydrogen, with natural occurrences presenting a promising solution.
Hydrogen, a versatile gas that can serve as both a fuel and an electricity generator in fuel cells, has gained attention for its potential in reducing emissions in challenging sectors like transportation and steelmaking. Currently, the majority of commercially available hydrogen is grey hydrogen, produced from fossil fuels without emission reduction measures, contributing significantly to carbon dioxide emissions.
In contrast, green hydrogen, produced through electrolysis of water using renewable energy sources, offers a cleaner alternative but remains less cost-competitive. The emergence of natural hydrogen, also known as white hydrogen, presents a potential solution that requires less energy-intensive processes for extraction, potentially leading to lower greenhouse gas emissions and more cost-effective production.
The geological uniqueness of Saskatchewan enables the accumulation of hydrogen in porous sand beds sealed under layers of shale and salt, offering promising prospects for natural hydrogen extraction. However, challenges remain in determining the feasibility of extracting hydrogen from known deposits efficiently and economically.
While natural hydrogen discoveries have sparked interest globally, including in Canada, the scalability and impact of white hydrogen on decarbonization efforts remain uncertain. Ongoing research and exploration efforts will be crucial in assessing the viability and commercial potential of natural hydrogen as a significant energy source in the future.
