The incident occurred during Joey Espinosa’s funeral service, where his aunt Laura Levario noticed the wrong casket and realized the person inside was not Joey. Laura’s husband had a heart attack due to the shock, requiring life support for three days.
Following the confusion, the family was relocated to another room at the Forest Lawn Covina Hills funeral home in California, where they encountered yet another incorrect casket. It took over an hour for staff to guide them to the correct room, causing immense distress for the family. Forest Lawn attributed the mix-up to a “scheduling error” and offered a $200 gesture of apology, which fell short of covering the substantial funeral expenses totaling nearly $20,000.
Subsequently, the Espinosa family initiated legal action against the mortuary for emotional distress and negligence. Their attorney emphasized the ordeal of searching for their loved one’s body instead of mourning, especially given the significant investment made for funeral services. This incident follows a similar mishap where two sisters discovered a stranger wearing their mother’s clothes in a coffin at a different funeral home in North Carolina. The situation was rectified after the mistaken identity was identified, allowing the funeral service to proceed as planned.
