Authorities in Brazil are investigating a widespread methanol poisoning incident that has resulted in the deaths of two individuals. The investigation led to the discovery of an illicit alcohol production facility in São Bernardo do Campo, São Paulo. The factory allegedly used contaminated ethanol purchased from gas stations to manufacture the beverages responsible for the fatalities.
Reports indicate that the tainted alcohol consumed by the victims contained a dangerous mixture of methanol and ethanol, with methanol levels exceeding 40%. Public Security Secretary Guilherme Derrite revealed that the same ethanol source was traced back to certain gas stations, highlighting a potential supply chain issue.
Law enforcement officials have taken swift action, arresting the factory owner on charges of forgery, corruption, and adulteration of food products. The individual may face significant penalties, including imprisonment and fines if found guilty.
The poisoning outbreak has claimed the lives of three individuals, including Bruna Araújo de Souza, Marcos Antônio Jorge Júnior, and Ricardo Lopes Mira, all residents of São Paulo. A total of 225 confirmed cases of methanol poisoning have been reported, prompting the closure of numerous businesses and the seizure of thousands of alcohol bottles.
Brazil’s Health Minister, Alexandre Padilha, has urged caution, advising against consuming unlabelled distilled products, particularly clear spirits like gin, vodka, and whiskey. The World Health Organization has also issued a call for enhanced surveillance and preventive measures to address the circulation of contaminated beverages.
