“UK Tightens Immigration Rules: English Proficiency Required”

Date:

Migrants seeking employment in Britain will now be required to attain a proficient level of English equivalent to an A-level standard, as per the newly introduced legislation. Applicants following specific legal pathways must demonstrate proficiency in speaking, listening, reading, and writing at an A-level equivalent.

To meet this requirement, individuals will need to undergo a Secure English Language Test administered by an approved provider recognized by the Home Office. The test results will play a crucial role in the visa application process, ensuring compliance with the new regulations.

This change is part of a broader initiative to strengthen visa regulations outlined in the Labour government’s Immigration White Paper. Additionally, adjustments will include reducing the post-study work period for international students to secure a graduate-level job from two years to 18 months, effective January 2027.

Furthermore, the Immigration Skills Charge (ISC) imposed on employers sponsoring skilled foreign workers will see an increase. The fee will rise from £364 to £480 per person annually for small or charitable organizations and from £1,000 to £1,320 for medium and large entities. The additional revenue generated from this charge will be reinvested in training the local workforce in the UK.

The ISC hike, the first since 2017, aims to enhance investments in British workers and decrease dependency on overseas recruitment, according to the Home Office. The process to implement this fee adjustment through the Parliamentary channels is scheduled to commence later this week.

Moreover, prospective students wishing to study in the UK will face heightened financial prerequisites, with the monthly requirement raised to £1,171 outside London (previously £1,136) for a maximum of nine months.

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood emphasized the importance of integrating into the national fabric by learning the language and participating actively in society. Starting from January 8, 2026, English language proficiency requirements for Skilled Worker, High Potential Individual (HPI), and Scale-up visa routes will elevate from B1 to B2 level, with similar adjustments anticipated for other visa categories, including dependents.

In a bid to attract top talent, the HPI route, catering to graduates from the top 100 global universities, will undergo expansion, aligning with the government’s strategy to draw highly skilled individuals to the country.
