In war-torn Gaza, children have diverse dreams despite the harsh reality they face. One child aspires to be a renowned writer, another dreams of becoming a doctor, while a third simply longs for pizza and ice cream. These poignant aspirations were captured through drawings created by children who benefited from Save the Children’s psychosocial support program in the famine-stricken region. The program provides a safe space for children to play and temporarily escape the turmoil of conflict.
Published by the Mirror, these drawings offer a glimpse into the hopes and ambitions of Palestinian children. The release of some hostages and prisoners as part of US President Donald Trump’s peace plan agreement between Israel and Hamas signifies a step towards peace. With the prospect of long-term peace on the horizon, the children’s illustrations reflect the possibilities they may now have to pursue their dreams.
Among the artwork, one drawing depicts a girl envisioning food, travel, and graduation, with thought bubbles showing a plane, various foods, and academic symbols. Another drawing suggests a child’s aspirations in business through a depiction of money. Additionally, a poignant image portrays a man amidst rubble, dreaming of travel and depicting graduation and a doctorate.
However, a stark contrast is evident in another child’s drawing, showcasing the devastating impact of the conflict with a destroyed playground and the aftermath of destruction. Ahmad Alhendawi, Regional Director for Save the Children, emphasized that these drawings mirror the children’s realities and desires for basic rights like food, education, safety, and a future. The anniversary of the attack on Israel in 2023 serves as a grim reminder of the ongoing conflict that has taken a toll on both sides.
