“Longest Hunger Strike in UK History Reaches Critical Juncture”

Date:

The ongoing hunger strike, now one of the longest in recent history, has reached a critical juncture with potentially fatal consequences. Despite the urgency of the situation, the Government has chosen to maintain silence.

A total of six individuals in British prisons are currently on hunger strike, having abstained from food for 46 days. This marks a significant milestone, surpassing the duration of the previous longest hunger strike during the 1981 Irish Republican Army protests at HMP Maze / Long Kesh in Northern Ireland.

The hunger strike initiated by Palestine Action commenced on November 2 and has now progressed into its second month. Among the hunger strikers are Qesser Zuhrah and Amu Gib on day 46, Heba Muraisa on day 45, Teuta Hoxha on day 39, Kamran Ahmed on day 38, and Lewie Chiaramello on day 24.

These individuals are currently fasting as they await trial for their involvement in direct action demonstrations in support of Palestine. While two other prisoners initially participated in the hunger strike, they have since discontinued their protest.

The hunger strikers have put forth a set of five demands, including the cessation of prison censorship, immediate bail for Palestine Action prisoners, fair trials for all accused individuals, the removal of the ‘terror’ designation from Palestine Action, and the closure of all Elbit Systems facilities in the UK.

Prisoners4Palestine, a prisoner-led collective, highlights that the hunger strikers face delays in their trial proceedings, with some individuals held in custody for an extended period without convictions. The organization emphasizes the right to protest as a fundamental civil liberty protected by the European Convention of Human Rights.

Efforts to draw attention to the hunger strikers’ plight have intensified, with calls for urgent action from political figures such as David Lammy, Wes Streeting, and Keir Starmer. Despite outreach attempts by The Mirror, responses from these officials have not been forthcoming as of the latest update.

Recent reports have underscored the deteriorating health conditions of the hunger strikers, with concerns raised regarding their well-being. Supporters, including Zarah Sultana MP and medical professionals, have rallied outside HMP Bronzefield, advocating for immediate hospitalization and independent medical assessments for the hunger strikers.

As the hunger strike enters a critical phase, the focus remains on preventing any potential fatalities among the hunger strikers detained in UK prisons. The urgency of the situation has prompted widespread calls for intervention to avoid a tragic outcome reminiscent of past historical events.

An open letter signed by over 200 prominent figures from various sectors urges the Prime Minister to intervene swiftly to prevent any loss of life among the hunger strikers. Notable personalities, including artists and activists, have joined forces to express solidarity with the imprisoned protesters challenging the actions of Israel in Gaza.
