Chris Dreja, the renowned rhythm guitarist and bassist of the Yardbirds, passed away at 79 after a prolonged battle with poor health. Muriel Levy, his sister-in-law, shared the sad news on Threads, commemorating his legacy and contributions to the iconic band. Chris was a founding member of the Yardbirds, originating in the suburbs of south-west London in 1963 alongside Anthony “Top” Topham, Keith Relf, Paul Samwell-Smith, and Jim McCarty. Despite facing health challenges with strokes in 2012 and 2013, Chris continued to perform with the band until around ten years ago.
The Yardbirds, known for their pioneering music, rose to fame with the 1965 hit “For Your Love” featuring Eric Clapton on guitar initially. Chris opted out of joining Led Zeppelin to focus on his photography career but continued to collaborate with music legends such as Bob Dylan, the Righteous Brothers, and Ike and Tina Turner.
In the 1980s, Chris performed with the Yardbirds spin-off band Box of Frogs and remained with the reformed Yardbirds from 1992 until 2013. The Yardbirds were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1992, with key members like Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page present at the ceremony. Fans shared heartfelt tributes upon hearing the news of Chris’s passing, reminiscing about his impact and musical legacy.
