Denise Van Outen and Johnny Vaughan experienced a public falling out during their tenure co-hosting The Big Breakfast Show in the late 1990s. Denise, who later participated in the show Strictly Come Dancing, attributed their rift to contractual disputes.
Reports at the time suggested that Johnny had negotiated a separate salary deal, leading to a breakdown in trust between the two hosts.
Speaking on the TV show Loose Women in 2017, Denise reflected on their fractured relationship, stating, “We were as close as siblings, best friends, inseparable. The dynamic changed when we began renegotiating our contracts, as I believed we were a team and should have been treated as such.”
Years later, Johnny offered his perspective on the situation in an interview with The Metro, expressing, “She may have had issues with me, but I never had any with her. I have great affection for Denise and won’t entertain any criticism against her.”
After a prolonged period of non-communication, Denise and Johnny briefly reunited on the Capital Radio Breakfast Show in 2008, hinting at a potential reconciliation.
However, their renewed partnership hit a roadblock when Denise departed the show prematurely, citing difficulties in communication and a lack of equal recognition on-air.
While Denise claimed that Johnny stifled her contributions and failed to acknowledge their joint hosting status, Johnny countered that her struggles were due to the transition from television to radio.
In an interview with The Mirror, Johnny admitted to a fallout but reiterated his admiration for Denise, adding, “Perhaps I could have been more supportive. Despite our differences, I have always held her in high regard.”
Despite their past conflicts, the duo has since patched up their relationship, collaborating on Celebrity Gogglebox and appearing together on Steph McGovern’s show, Steph’s Packed Lunch, in 2023.
Reflecting on their rekindled bond, Johnny emphasized their ongoing connection, sharing, “We’ve worked together on Gogglebox, I see her frequently, and we still talk almost every week. Regardless of our disagreements, she has always been there for me, and I strive to reciprocate that support.”
