“Beware: Dubai’s Strict Laws Surprise British Expats”

Date:

In recent times, an increasing number of British individuals are seeking to trade the gloomy skies of their homeland for a more appealing lifestyle characterized by perpetual sunshine in Dubai.

The city, a highly sought-after destination in the United Arab Emirates, boasts tax-free income, lucrative career prospects offering higher earning potentials, and a low crime rate supported by modern infrastructure. Its allure is further accentuated by opulent shopping centers, pristine golden beaches, remarkable architecture, and consistent warm weather throughout the year.

Despite attracting over 15 million tourists annually, Dubai upholds stringent laws and traditions that both visitors and residents must adhere to. One such regulation, as highlighted by a British expatriate living there, pertains to a seemingly innocuous offense that could result in imprisonment.

Janelle Ciara, who relocated from the UK to Dubai, was surprised to discover this strict custom. Initially planning for a brief stay of only a month, she found herself quickly adapting to the luxurious lifestyle of the city and has now extended her residency, currently undergoing visa procedures.

During her adjustment period in Dubai, Janelle learned that uttering profanities or making rude gestures, even on social media platforms, could lead to severe consequences. In a TikTok video (@janelleciara1), she cautioned, “Some individuals have faced fines for sharing inappropriate or offensive content on platforms like WhatsApp, Facebook, and others.”

As per the Gov.uk website for the United Arab Emirates, it explicitly states, “It is illegal to engage in swearing or making offensive gestures, including online platforms, as they are deemed indecent acts. Violators risk imprisonment or deportation. Exercise caution when interacting with law enforcement and other authorities.”

Janelle’s video gained significant traction, amassing 2.6 million views, as she elaborated on a list of other infractions that could have dire consequences for individuals, particularly those from England. Among these is the consumption of alcohol and public intoxication.

While consuming alcohol is no longer considered a criminal offense in Dubai, and residents or tourists do not require a license for it, imbibing in public spaces is strictly prohibited. Janelle clarified, “Drinking or being inebriated in public is not permissible. Alcohol consumption is restricted to licensed venues such as bars, restaurants, and hotels. However, being intoxicated in public can result in fines or imprisonment.”

Moreover, Public Displays of Affection (PDA) are disapproved of in the region. Janelle cautioned, “PDA can lead to serious consequences.” In a past incident in 2010, a British couple faced arrest for sharing a kiss at a restaurant, which locals deemed a violation of the country’s decency norms.

Ayman Najafi, 24, and Charlotte Adams, 25, contested their conviction, asserting that it was merely a peck on the cheek. Nonetheless, they lost their appeal and were sentenced to a month in jail before being deported. The Gov.uk website emphasizes that public displays of affection, such as kissing in public, are discouraged and can result in arrests.

Furthermore, strict regulations govern same-sex relationships in the Emirates. Janelle emphasized, “Engaging in same-sex relationships may lead to deportation or imprisonment.”

According to the Gov.uk website, “Same-sex sexual activities are illegal in the UAE, and same-sex marriages are not recognized.”

It is strongly advised to dress modestly when in public spaces, a custom adhered to by both locals and visitors, considering the Islamic influence in the country. Although there is no official dress code, modest attire is recommended, especially outside, while the rules are generally more relaxed within hotel premises.

Janelle highlighted in her video, “Public nudity is prohibited, and it is advisable to dress modestly in public areas. When leaving the beach, ensure you cover up appropriately.”

The Gov.uk website advises, “Dress modestly in public settings like shopping malls, as some venues, events, or establishments may enforce specific dress codes.”
