The UK is bracing for snowfall in the next 24 hours, as detailed weather maps pinpoint the areas likely to be affected.
According to the GFS model maps, snow is expected to begin in Scotland and northern England around 6pm on Friday, accompanying a weather system moving in from the Atlantic. This system will also bring heavy rain to Northern Ireland, Wales, and the rest of England.
By 9pm, the maps indicate intense snowfall in the Lake District, the Pennines, southern Scotland, and parts of the Highlands, while the east coast of England will experience the heaviest rain during this period.
Later around midnight, the maps show continued snowfall in Scotland, with Glasgow and areas south of Edinburgh likely to see snow accumulation.
Snow coverage projections suggest that snow could reach as far south as the Peak District, with towns along the east coast, including Redcar, possibly being affected by snowfall.
The Met Office anticipates snowfall later in the month, with the forecast for December 19 to January 2 indicating variable conditions with rain, showers, and possible hill snow in the north. The forecast also mentions the likelihood of dry weather due to potential high-pressure systems, alongside near-average temperatures with chances of colder intervals.
Additionally, a yellow weather warning for fog is in place for East Sussex, Kent, Surrey, and West Sussex starting tomorrow. The warning highlights the potential for freezing fog development in southeast England, leading to reduced visibility and patches of ice formation on untreated surfaces after rainfall.
