A tragic incident occurred at a child’s birthday party when a vehicle veered off the road and crashed into a group of attendees, resulting in the death of one woman and injuries to over a dozen individuals.
The collision took place late on Saturday night in Bladensburg, a serene suburb near Washington DC. Attendees were gathered under a white marquee outside a residence, enjoying the festivities when a light-colored sedan unexpectedly crashed through the tent, causing chaos among the families present, as reported by the local police department and the Prince George’s County Fire and EMS Department.
Among the injured were eight children, ranging from one to 17 years old. Emergency responders faced a chaotic scene as they provided assistance to the victims on the property.
The driver reportedly accelerated and struck multiple individuals. Images of the aftermath showed the car inside the tent, surrounded by overturned chairs, destroyed decorations, and birthday balloons. Tragically, one woman, identified as Ashley Hernandez Gutierrez from Washington DC, succumbed to her injuries.
Authorities confirmed that the crash resulted in a total of 13 injuries. Six children were treated at the scene and later discharged, while one child was transported to the hospital and remains in stable condition. Additionally, three adults are currently hospitalized.
The 66-year-old driver initially fled the scene but later surrendered to the police. Following questioning, authorities are considering appropriate criminal charges.
Bladensburg police released a statement on Sunday indicating the status of the victims: “Six of the juvenile victims have been treated and released, one has been admitted and is in stable condition. Three adult victims have been admitted to the hospital and are in stable condition, one is pending treatment, and one has been released.”
