Lidl, known for its affordable groceries, is venturing into the mobile phone market with budget-friendly plans. To access these deals, customers will need a Lidl Plus account. This move is part of a significant £600 million investment by the supermarket chain, which also includes the opening of 50 new stores nationwide.
Following in the footsteps of other unconventional players in the telecom industry like Revolut and Klarna, Lidl is introducing low-cost phone plans. While the service is currently available in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, there are plans to expand to the UK, US, France, and Spain in the future.
Through a partnership with 1GLOBAL communications provider, Lidl will operate as a Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO), utilizing existing infrastructure for its mobile services. In addition to its telecom foray, Lidl is set to open over 50 new stores in various locations, creating around 2,000 jobs.
The expansion aligns with Lidl’s commitment to supporting communities and offering affordable, nutritious food. Schwarz Group, Lidl’s parent company, will also acquire a 9.9% stake in 1GLOBAL as part of the agreement, furthering its digital ambitions in the telecommunications sector.
In parallel, Schwarz Group has been strengthening its presence in the tech industry through Schwarz Digits, focusing on cloud computing, cybersecurity, and investments in AI startups. Analysts predict that Lidl’s entry into new markets could intensify competition for established telecom providers, emphasizing affordability and convenience for consumers.
The employment minister praised Lidl’s investment for creating thousands of quality jobs with fair wages, enhancing living standards across various regions. This strategic move not only benefits consumers but also contributes to economic growth and job creation in the UK.
