“Prison worker caught smuggling drugs with hidden trousers”

Date:

A prison worker engaged in corrupt activities was caught due to a sniffer dog’s suspicion of him wearing two pairs of trousers. Paul Heath, a maintenance contractor at HMP Liverpool, used a hidden pair of trousers to sneak large quantities of cannabis into the prison. Heath also concealed contraband in packages taped to his ankles, with discussions indicating his involvement in delivering weapons to inmates.

Driven by a severe gambling addiction, Heath received payments of up to £1000 per delivery. His illicit activities were exposed on May 27 when a security dog displayed interest in him during a routine check at the prison’s security area. Subsequently, cash, phones, and drugs were found in his possession, with a total value of thousands of pounds.

Heath, who had no prior criminal record, admitted to smuggling illegal items into the prison and participating in drug trafficking. During sentencing, the court acknowledged his remorse and highlighted his troubled personal circumstances, including family losses and mental health issues. Despite considerations for his rehabilitation potential, Heath was sentenced to 20 months in jail for breaching the trust placed in him as a prison staff member and endangering the prison’s security.
