“UK Faces Major Landline Transition to VoIP by 2027”

Date:

A significant shift is imminent in how households in the UK stay connected with their loved ones. Starting in January next year, consumers nationwide will transition from the traditional copper-wire phone lines known as the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) to the modern Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) technology.

VoIP operates via an internet connection for making phone calls, offering advantages such as improved call quality, enhanced reliability, and additional features like spam call protection and call forwarding.

Despite the long-planned transition, a recent report from telecom experts at Phonely reveals that over 58.7% of UK adults aged over 50 are unaware of the impending shutdown of traditional landlines, even with the extended deadline of January 31, 2027.

Phonely warns that this lack of awareness could lead to a surge in last-minute upgrades in 2026, potentially causing issues such as equipment shortages, delays in installations, and increased pressure on telecom providers, especially in rural areas.

As the 2027 deadline approaches, experts emphasize the importance of not delaying the switch to VoIP. Bryn Thompson, Director at Phonely, expressed concerns about the false sense of security created by the deadline extension and the potential chaos if a majority of users wait until the last minute to switch.

Dan Skipper, Chief Executive of Age UK Norwich, highlighted the importance of understanding the implications of the landline transition, especially for older individuals who rely on landlines for social connections and safety. He advised contacting telephone providers to explore options for the switch and ensure necessary support, particularly for those without internet access.

The transition involves retiring the UK’s copper-based PSTN network and introducing digital VoIP services. After January 31, 2027, traditional analogue landlines will cease to function, with calls being routed through broadband connections.

While many younger households have already embraced mobile phones, a significant number of individuals over 50, especially in rural areas, still rely on landlines for daily communication and emergency situations.

Telephone providers are expected to inform customers directly about the switch, detailing the necessary steps. The transition is typically cost-free, requiring only a broadband connection and a compatible phone for the new system to operate.

However, concerns have been raised regarding the reliance on internet access, particularly for older users without online connectivity. Solutions for these individuals are under consideration ahead of the 2027 deadline, with recommendations for concerned users to engage with their phone providers to explore available options.
