Rory McIlroy and Tommy Fleetwood fell short of the £1.1 million top prize as Aaron Rai emerged victorious in a thrilling play-off at the Abu Dhabi Championship. This event marked the first of the two DP World Tour Play-off contests as the Race to Dubai nears its conclusion.
Yas Links witnessed the intense competition with two European Ryder Cup stars in contention. Fleetwood narrowly missed out in the play-off, while McIlroy secured a tied third-place finish. The tournament’s Play-off status significantly boosted the prize money, with a total purse of nearly £7 million up for grabs.
Fleetwood received just over £750,000, while McIlroy shared £752,000 with Nicolai Højgaard for the third and fourth positions. Despite trailing Rai by six shots entering the final round, McIlroy’s impressive 62 propelled him back into contention, although he ultimately fell short.
The competition intensified as McIlroy finished at 24 under, with Fleetwood and Rai both sinking crucial putts on the 17th hole to head into the final tied at 25 under. Following a par from Fleetwood, Rai missed a birdie putt, forcing the tournament into a play-off.
In the decisive extra hole, both players had birdie opportunities. Rai sealed the victory by sinking his putt after Fleetwood missed his attempt from a slightly longer distance. Rai expressed his elation at the win, emphasizing the intensity of the moment and the privilege of competing alongside Tommy.
Reflecting on his performance, Rai credited his caddie for providing crucial support during challenging moments on the course. He highlighted a pivotal recovery on the 15th hole that boosted his confidence and enabled him to finish strong in the closing stretch.
The Race to Dubai will culminate with the DP World Tour Championship commencing on November 13.
