“Monty Don’s October Gardening Guide: Hedgehog Help and Leafmould Love”

Date:

As fall sets in, novice gardeners are gearing up for the upcoming colder months by getting their gardens ready.

Renowned gardening expert Monty Don has outlined his essential tasks for October, with a special focus on aiding hedgehogs and other small creatures. Emphasizing his passion for leafmould, Monty underscores the value of fallen leaves in creating this valuable garden resource without the need for intensive labor.

In addition to making leafmould, Monty stresses the importance of leaving leaf piles under trees and bushes to offer winter shelter for various wildlife. He also suggests providing protection for tender plants from the cold and continuing deadheading to prolong the flowering season.

To save money, Monty advises collecting seeds from perennial plants for future use, storing them in paper bags in a cool, dry place. He recommends taking cuttings, maintaining grass length, pruning climbing roses, and sowing sweet peas in October for early and extended blooming in spring.

For successful sweet pea cultivation, Monty recommends sowing seeds in batches, using good quality potting compost, and providing protection from frost and excess moisture. By following his guidance on seed sowing and care, gardeners can ensure healthy plant growth and vibrant blooms in the coming seasons.
