“Expert Warns: Protect Potted Plants from Rain Damage”

Date:

Wet weather is making a comeback in the UK, but not everyone in the gardening community sees it as a positive change. While some gardeners welcome the rain for their plants, an expert is issuing a cautionary message.

For those with potted plants, leaving them on the ground during heavy rain can lead to root suffocation and potential plant damage. Josh Novell, a horticultural specialist at Polhill Garden Centre, warns that rain can have negative effects on certain plants.

He advises moving potted plants away from the ground before rainfall to prevent water from accumulating in the pots. This simple action can help avoid root suffocation, nutrient blockages, and vulnerability to fungal diseases like root rot and powdery mildew.

To protect plants further, it is recommended to elevate pots using materials like bricks or stones to prevent waterlogging. Checking drainage holes in pots before rainstorms is also essential to ensure proper water flow.

Certain plants thrive in wet conditions, such as aquatic plants and bog plants, so they do not require elevation or aeration. However, delicate plants should be safeguarded under shelter during heavy rainfall.

For taller plants, using stakes or supports can prevent them from toppling over in strong winds. When covering plants for protection, breathable materials should be used to prevent fungal diseases caused by trapped moisture.

After a storm, inspect plants for any damage, as root issues may not be immediately visible above ground. Tilting trays or elevating containers can aid in drainage and prevent root suffocation and pest infestations.

Taking these precautions can help protect plants during wet weather and ensure their health and vitality.
